Rich Sad Doctors

As we progress as a country, every day brings a brand new set of worries. Preyuda helps India deal with the mental and physical repercussions of it’s busy lifestyles.

The 7th Annual World Happiness Report released by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network of the United Nations has brought up some unpleasant revelations for Indians. On one hand, while India’s GDP has doubled in the last decade, its average happiness has gone down by about 1.2 points, according to the Report’s Happiness Index. To put the statistics into perspective, India’s rank has plunged from 133rd position in 2018 to 140th in 2019. The data clearly proves that happiness is not entirely dependent on income. Even with higher incomes than before, people remain unhappy because of factors like rapid urbanization, congestion in cities, environmental pollution and problems of commuting. The lack of urban planning may seem like the remotest of the factors but even the report admits there has been an increase in negative emotions including worry, anger and sadness because of it.

In a country that struggles chronically with maintaining a work life balance, Indian doctors are in the worst position. There is one doctor for every 1,457 citizens, an overwhelming responsibility in itself. In order to cope with the rising demands, India will need 2.07 million more doctors just by 2030. Keeping these numbers in mind, we can slightly grasp the level of pressure that medical professionals in India face on a daily basis. To say that this pressure takes a toll would be an understatement. The Indian Journal of Psychiatry concluded in a study that 30% of Indian doctors and physicians go through depression, while 17% have experienced thoughts about ending their life. Almost 80% of doctors especially at the earlier stages of their academics and career face the risk of burnout.

Preyuda is taking the first step in the direction of helping the doctors of India execute a lifestyle change. Our services for helping ease the daily strains of a doctor’s life include procurement management, process improvement, staffing, web development and arranging for Fitness Bootcamps that are focussed on alleviating stress and anxiety with yoga and meditation. Our culture has long used the healing powers of Yoga for mental and physical health development. At a time when people are insecure about their health due to multiple financial and personal reasons, Yoga provides an incredible alternative. It not only helps improve cognitive-behavioural performance but eases the effects of mood swings, menopause, schizophrenia, insomnia, depression and anxiety. Even simple yoga practices and breathing techniques allow you to free your mind from the muddle, which eventually helps your physical well-being.
