Coronavirus in India: India can conquer COVID-19 and can set an example for all over the world. We have the largest number of young skilled doctors, nurses and paramedic staff.
We are fortunate that we have lock down our country way before it becomes uncontrollable. But everyone aware of the Indian healthcare system where we are spending less than 1.5% of GDP i.e. very less as compare to developed nations and if the situation becomes uncontrollable we are not ready to combat with Corona.
In this situation, all responsibilities will come to doctors and other paramedic staff.
Let us compare the situation of Madhya Pradesh with Italy’s northern region, Lombardy. Lombardy has a population of 10 million and the Madhya Pradesh population is 84 million. Lombardy has 13,272 positive patients, out of whom 15 percent needed hospitalization and 12 percent needed ICU care. . In such case, Madhya Pradesh will have 11485 cases in which 16723 will needed hospitalization and 13379 will required ICU care.
Probable cases of COVID-19 in some Indian states when we compared with Lombardy (Italy)
Government action plan in such situation:
- Converting big hospitals like Hamidia into dedicated COVID-19 facilities.
- Oxygen supply should be maintained properly.
- The whole hospital should in isolation hospital; soon we need to force to put patients in the corridors of the hospital.
- The first point of contact for the suspected COVID-19 patients should be the government hospital.
- For 2000 ICU beds, a 6-hour shift needs 700 nurses, 200 resident doctors, and 100 anaesthetist.
For 24 hours coverage 2800 nurses, 800 resident doctors, and 400 anaesthetist. - PG students, interns, and final year medical students should be posted in the
respective hospitals. - Junior doctors should be trained to work with PPE in non-Covid 19 for 2 weeks under supervision before entering the COVID-19 ICU.
- Indian nursing council should permit final year nursing students to take care, stable
ICU patients.
